If you own a home in Worthing, you’ll know how much wear and tear our properties take. Between older pipework in period houses and the salty coastal air creeping into everything, plumbing doesn’t always shout when something’s wrong. Quite often, it whispers.

Hidden leaks are one of the most common problems we get called out to. The tricky part is that by the time you see water properly coming through a ceiling or wall, the damage has usually been building for a while. Knowing the early hidden plumbing leaks signs can save you a lot of stress and a fair bit of money.

Here’s what to look out for and when it’s time to get someone in.

Signs of Hidden Leaks

Your water bill has crept up

If your water usage hasn’t changed but your bill has, it’s often the first red flag. We’ve had customers call thinking the supplier has made a mistake, only to find a slow leak under the floorboards.

A simple check is to turn off all taps and appliances that use water, then see if your water meter is still moving. If it is, water is escaping somewhere.

Patches on walls or ceilings

One of the most obvious hidden plumbing leaks signs is discolouration. Brownish rings on ceilings, bubbling paint or wallpaper peeling for no clear reason can all point to a leak behind the surface.

In Worthing and the surrounding areas, we see this a lot in upstairs bathrooms where pipe joints have loosened slightly over time. Even a tiny drip can soak into plasterboard and spread further than you expect.

A musty smell that won’t go away

You might notice a damp, slightly sour smell in a cupboard, under the stairs or in a bathroom cabinet. People often assume it’s just lack of ventilation, but persistent smells can mean water is sitting somewhere it shouldn’t be.

Trust your nose. If it smells damp but you can’t see damp, there’s usually a reason.

Cold spots or damp flooring

Leaks under concrete floors or tiled areas are harder to spot. One tell-tale sign is an unexpected warm patch if it’s a central heating pipe, or a damp, slightly springy feel underfoot.

We’ve lifted plenty of laminate floors to find water trapped underneath, especially in kitchens where pipework runs to sinks and appliances.

Low water pressure

If your shower suddenly feels weaker or taps are not running as strongly as they used to, it could be more than just a pressure issue from the mains.

A leak in the system reduces overall pressure. It’s not always dramatic, but combined with other hidden plumbing leaks signs, it’s something worth checking.

The Risks of Leaving It Too Long

It’s tempting to ignore a small patch or assume it will dry out. Unfortunately, water rarely fixes itself.

  • Damage to plaster, flooring and timber
  • Mould growth which can affect health
  • Electrical risks if water reaches wiring
  • Structural damage over time

In older homes around this part of West Sussex, timber joists can suffer badly if they’re exposed to long-term moisture. We’ve seen bathroom leaks that have slowly rotted floor supports without the homeowner realising until tiles started cracking.

Mould is another issue. It does not just look unpleasant. In family homes especially, it can trigger breathing problems and allergies.

When to Call a Plumber

Homeowners often ask us, “Should I wait and see if it gets worse?” The honest answer is no. If you’ve noticed more than one of the signs above, it’s worth getting it checked.

Call a plumber if:

  • Your water meter is moving when nothing is on
  • You can see repeated damp patches
  • You suspect a leak under flooring or in walls
  • Your boiler pressure keeps dropping without explanation

Leak detection today is far more precise than it used to be. We can often trace the problem with minimal disruption rather than ripping out half a room. Sometimes it’s as simple as a loose compression fitting. Other times it might be a pinhole in older copper pipework that needs replacing.
